Franklin Mural Project

Who We Are

The Franklin Mural Project is a hybrid (both physical and digital) mural project aimed at cultivating critical perspectives of place in Northeast Los Angeles (NELA). It began in 2005 at Franklin High School in Highland Park as a student-teacher collaboration to illustrate a timeline of NELA. Their plan was to create a mural for each of the four floors of Franklin's main building, each level representing a different era in the history of the land.

The Murals

The first mural was completed in 2009 and it depicts a pre-contact Tongva landscape as well as a (non-specific) village site just northeast of Yaagna (the main village site of Tovaangar) in between the rolling foothills of what is referred today as Northeast Los Angeles.
